Terms & Conditions

Honesty is received without judgement

You must inform Layne of any past and current physical or behavioural issues plus bite history etc when booking with Streetwise Dogs. All questions during training sessions, behaviour sessions, assessments, initial consultations or phone calls must be answered honestly so that Layne is able to form a clear understanding of your dogs needs and provide the appropriate support in the safest way.

Transparency is essential

You understand there are often no quick fixes and that it can take time and hard work to help modify a dog’s behaviour. You also acknowledge that some behaviours can only be modified and not totally changed. You also recognise that control and management is often the best option to remove stress and unwanted behaviours.

You assume sole responsibility for the behaviour of the dog and forever release, hold harmless, and indemnify Layne Arlina or anyone working with or for her, from any harm or damage caused by you or your dog to any person or persons or property at any time. Furthermore, you expressly and irrevocably forever waive and relinquish any and all claims against Layne Arlina. You understand that Layne Arlina is in no way responsible for the behaviour of you dog during or after training.

You recognise that the services offered are designed to provide science led, force free advice and suggested protocols to follow to aid in training and behavioural modification. The onus is on you the client to do the work needed and to follow the guidance given.

If at any time during the training Layne Arlina or anyone working for or with her, reasonably believes that the dog is ill, abused, exhibiting aggressive, fearful, compulsive, anxious, phobic, or any behaviours that may interfere or endanger the health and safety of any participants or bystanders, including the dog, you agree that they may unilaterally end any training session. The dogs welfare is always paramount. Some sessions may be cut short if the dog is exhibiting high levels of stress. This can be decided by the trainer or by your or any of the dog's guardians.

REACTIVITY/AGGRESSION: In the case of issues that have caused the dog to show reactivity/aggression - you understand that the only way to guarantee a dog no longer uses aggression is to euthanize the animal - this simply recognises that no guarantees can ever be made about ANY dog that they will not show signs of aggression or become dangerous. Behaviour is a way of communicating how they feel, so we can help them feel better so they no longer feel the need to use aggression but we can never remove this natural method of communicating distress. The behaviour of your dog and the liability attached to that behaviour is solely your responsibility and will always remain so.

Veterinary Assessment

Prior to booking Behaviour Consultations a physical assessment with your Vet is important, as this will rule out any underlying physical illness or discomfort. This not only saves you money, but puts your dogs welfare above all. A dog may chase his tail due to pain and not cognitive issues as one would automatically assume. Invisible problems are common and it is wise to rule them out before taking further treatment. A signed, headed letter from your Vet stating their physical health is sufficient when booking.

Booking and cancelling 1-to-1 services

Streetwise Dogs fees are subject to change. Consessions are offered on a case-by-case basis, if you would struggle to afford a series of consults that we have said your dog will need please tell us.

To book, write to us with a brief description of your dog's behaviour so we can arrange a free discovery call and find the best service for you and your dog's needs. During this call, a suitable service, date and time slot will be offered, which you can reserve by paying a depost over the phone. To secure your booking the full fee must be paid within 3 days of agreeing to a date. If when booking, the service starts in less than 1 week then the fee must be paid in full over the phone.

To cancel a booking with more than 1 months notice, you'll receive a full refund. When cancelling with less than 1 months notice no refunds will be given to ensure money is not lost when covering venue hire, staff, equipment and time. If there is a genuine reason to cancel or postpone please do explain as discretions can be made.

You understand and agree that we reserve the right to terminate this agreement at any time and refund your money in full or in part without any further liability or obligation to you. There may be occasions when I need to rearrange your booking date at short notice.

You understand that your participation and involvement is a key part of accomplishing the agreed-upon goals and objectives. It is the client’s responsibility to ensure they attend on the correct date, time and location for the service you have booked.

Groups & Workshop Terms, booking & cancellation policy

Tickets are sold to the first to pay. Places cannot be reserved. Your payment secures your place on the entire term, walk, class or workshop. Tickets are usually sold through TicketTailor. If you are unable to attend for any reason, please let Layne know as soon as possible.

Streetwise Dogs require 1 month notification of cancellation of a place on all classes and courses. No refunds will be given for places cancelled within 1 month from the start of your booking. I run a small business thus only able to offer a limited number of places. Refunds cannot be given after a training course or workshop has begun. If you wish to transfer your booking to a later date, this is possible but is at the discretion of the trainer. Bookings can only be postponed once. Partial refunds are not offered for missed classes. Exceptional circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis. Please speak with Layne directly.

If a class or workshop is to be cancelled due to circumstance beyond my control, a refund will not automatically be given but every effort will be made to rearrange a replacement training session as soon as possible.

You understand and agree that we reserve the right to terminate this Agreement at any time and refund your money in full or in part without any further liability or obligation to you. You understand that your participation and involvement is a key part of accomplishing the agreed-upon goals and objectives. It is the client’s responsibility to ensure they attend on the correct date, time and location for the class or workshop, according to the tutor’s prior instructions.

When time allows you will be sent a confirmation of your booking by email, otherwise, your receipt is a confirmation of your booking.

Your confirmation email will state the start date, important information and list items you need to bring with you to the session.

Before we work with your dog you must sign that you agree to these rules and our T&C's. Click the link at the bottom of this page to sign our digital training agreement.

During training sessions, your dog must be attended to and cared for at all times, kept under control on-lead and cleaned up after. Please bring plenty of poo-bags, yummy treats, a non-squeaky toy, and a bottle of water with a bowl.

There is a restriction of 2 people per dog when attending class to avoid further distractions, but allowances can be made when asking in advance. Young people under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. All new attendees who accompany the dogs primary owner/ caregiver must also abide by the force-free code of conduct mentioned in our  T & C's. Do not bring any animals that are not enrolled on the class date currently running.

We uphold a zero-tolerance policy on bullying, this includes rudeness; should we witness or hear of any negative comments towards another person or their dog we will take action. We are here to have fun and train our dogs, anyone purposely disrupting this for others will be asked to leave and not be refunded. If an issue arises with another student please tell your trainer so attempts can be made to resolve it.

If your dog is struggling with the learning environment you will be asked to return to your car to provide your dog with the rest they need. Layne will offer you an alternative learning option, be that remote learning or 1-to-1 sessions until they are ready to rejoin. We want them to learn without distress.

  • DO NOT approach other dogs during training as this causes unwanted distractions. Even if you know them, please ask and don't just assume as they may be in the midst of training a great skill.

  • Dogs must be kept away from other dogs during class unless instructed otherwise by the trainer. Not all dogs feel safe with another dog close within their space.

  • Flexi/ extendable leads are not permitted during class to avoid injury to others. Ask Layne about alternatives. Leads will be provided for you to use within class. Please return at the end.

  • Head collards are not permitted during class to prevent distraction and injury to the neck. Body harnesses please. Layne will show you lead-handling techniques to help with this.

  • You must report any accident or injury to Layne or the other trainers at the time they occur. Layne is trained in Canine First Aid and is able to offer medical assistance until Veterinary help arrives

  • If your dog has been in contact with a dog infected with a contagious disease such as Kennel Cough please inform Layne and refrain from attending until it is certain your dog has not become ill too.

  • If your dog has had a Kennel Cough vaccination please wait 14 days before attending class as it's a live vaccine.

  • If your bitch is in season, about to begin or has just finished, please let Layne know before bringing her to class a safer space can be sectioned off for her.

  • Entire males are welcome to class, as are intact females. We do NOT support neutering/ sterilisation for behaviour purposes as modern behaviour and veterinary science has shown this procedure can enhance behaviour problems as opposed to resolve them. Dogs are kept separate to allow them to learn and prevent risk of pregnancies or infections.

If you are unsure whether it is OK to attend, please do not hesitate to contact Layne or your Vet for advice. Dogs who are unable to attend class can continue their training at home, as owners are more than welcome to attend to keep up to date with their training skills.

Booking confirms your attendance for the entire course.  Please make every effort to attend each week, even if you attend without your dog should they be unable to join us, you will learn regardless!

If you are unable to attend for any reason, please let Layne know as soon as possible.

When time allows you will be sent a confirmation of your booking by email, otherwise, your receipt is a confirmation of your booking. Your confirmation email will state the start date, important information and list items you need to bring with you to the session.

Code of Conduct

As a member of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers, the Dog Welfare Alliance and the International School of Canine Psychology, Layne Arlina abides by a strict code of ethics to use and advocate fear-free and reward-based training methods.

http://www.imdt.uk.com/code-of-ethics.html

Streetwise Dogs applies a combination of methods taught by the IMDT and ISCP. The 2 key methods I use when training are Positive Reinforcement which strengthens wanted behaviour through rewards, and Negative Punishment to reduce unwanted behaviour by removing what the dog finds rewarding such as treats, toys and attention.

Streetwise Dogs applies and advocates the use of reward-based training and behaviour equipment such as a clicker/ marker, food, toys, agility equipment, body harness, flat collar, basket muzzle, training lines, Bach remedies, essential oils and flower essences. Aversive training methods and equipment designed to 'correct'/ punish are never used and are not permitted while your dog is receiving training/ treatment with Streetwise Dogs.

The following methods of NOT PERMITTED: physical force, lead-jerking, kneeing, prodding, shouting etc.

The following equipment is NOT PERMITTED: prong collars, choke/ half-choke collars, citronella, check-chains, fabric muzzles, Electronic Training Devices (shock collars), spray bottles, shaking bottles, air canisters, anything that causes pain or discomfort to the dog, or anything the trainer feels is unacceptable. If these have been your methods up until now, let Layne know and she can offer effective alternatives to avoid further problems.

Welfare

If at any time during the training Layne Arlina or anyone working for or with her, reasonably believes that the dog is ill, abused, exhibiting aggressive, fearful, compulsive, anxious, phobic, or any behaviours that may interfere or endanger the health and safety of any participants or bystanders, including the dog, you agree that they may unilaterally end any training session. The dogs welfare is always paramount. Some sessions may be cut short if the dog is exhibiting high levels of stress. This can be decided by the trainer or by your or any of the dog's guardians.

If for any reason a Streetwise Dogs member of staff has concerns for their welfare they have the right to walk away and cancel future bookings with that individual and their dog. Should an individual become rude or aggressive with staff, another customer or a dog during training classes they will be ordered to leave the class and no refund will be given. All accidents, incidents and concerns are recorded for legal use if necessary. Should any person threaten a member of staff or another customer, legal action may be taken. Streetwise Dogs does not tolerate rude behaviour, be that by being verbally or physically aggressive.

You may question at any time any of the methods used by Layne Arlina or anyone working on her behalf and request to stop the training session at any time.
